Dear Friends and Family,
It certainly has been an extremely challenging year for many. Times like these have made
many of us think even more often about Geralynn. As a sister she was always there for
conversation, counsel and words of encouragement in difficult times. She was a compassionate
person and someone who took charge if needed and shouldered more if no one else would. We all
miss Ger.
Six years ago Geralynn passed away but her legacy continues. Her fund, The Geralynn
Anne Fountain Memorial Fund, was formed to support the students at Inter-Lakes Elementary
School. Ger wanted us to help the teachers positively affect the students through science. For the
past several years we have done this by funding the school’s partnership with Prescott Farm.
As you know, The Naturalist in the Classroom Program brings students and teachers closer
to the community and natural environment. The Prescott Farm staff work with teachers to integrate
the curriculum and use readily available resources. The lessons are hands-on, placed-based
learning. This enhances an understanding and respect for nature, the science of natural systems,
natural history of the area, and an adoption of environmental stewardship practices. For elementary
school students, this equates to more involvement and less time sitting and listening.
As we all know, the 2019-2020 school year was shortened for many including the I-L
Elementary School. Student experiences were cancelled or postponed. The Prescott Farm initiative
was no different. The children lost out on a great experience which we hope returns next school
year. This loss is a minor hardship families are encountering. Sickness, emotional wellbeing and
financial burdens are taking a more dramatic toll on many.
In times like these we firmly believe Geralynn would again provide guidance on how best to
help our communities. She would say something to the effect “there are others who need help. We
are fortunate.” To that end, we thank all of you for your love and support of our family and
Geralynn’s fund but this year we suggest you help others more in need. The students of I-L will be
back to school eventually and they will be inspired. Now is the time to help the sick, the financially
burdened, and the emotionally strained. Please direct your prayers and generosity to them. Ger
would be setting the example and doing the same.
We will be financially supporting the I-L Elementary School partnership with Prescott Farm
Environmental Education Center (www.prescottfarm.org) in 2020-2021. Until then, thank you for
your love and generosity. It has been inspiring.
Be safe,
Stephen and Megan Fountain and the O’Brien Family
